Colour - Space
“Another important formal component is Rouli Lecatsa’s work with color fields. Most of the time, she ‘paints’ with a scraper, which makes the pictures appear planar in two ways. By using a scraper, applying the color is often an interaction between many individual small surfaces. On a second level, she works with colorful areas in the composition by juxtaposing them. This means that the pictorial objects are not plastic bodies, but composed by surfaces – which creates a characteristic spatial structure. The represented scenery seems almost fragmentary. The reality imminent to the picture seems prismatic, divided into many individual fragments. Particularly impressive spaces are created in pictures such as “Landscape” (2005) or in architecturally accomplished works such as “Dissonanz” (“Dissonance”) (2014).
In the individual color fields, the intrinsic value of color is emphasized. Due to their combination, intense color moods are created. Even entirely abstract works such as “Red Space” (2013) manage to get under the viewers’ skin. The shades of red – from crimson, light red, and blood red to reddish-black – directly evoke emotions and associations.
